Chapter 15 - The Empire of LightThree months later.

The sterile, quiet safety of a hospital room is a place I once associated with profound, agonizing loneliness.

But as I lay in the bed at Mercy General, exhausted, sweating, and overwhelmingly happy, the room was anything but lonely.

Outside the window, a gentle summer rain washed over Manhattan. But inside, it was entirely warm.

Lucian sat in the chair right beside my bed. The chair that was no longer empty. He hadn't left my side for fourteen hours. He had held my hand through every contraction, murmured words of love and encouragement in Italian, and wiped the sweat from my forehead with unwavering devotion.

And now, he was holding our daughter.

Isabella.

She was tiny, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, with a shock of dark hair and my nose. Lucian held her against his chest, tears streaming silently down his face as he looked at her. He looked like a man who had just been handed the entire universe.

“She’s perfect,” Lucian whispered, his voice cracking. He carefully leaned over, placing a soft, lingering kiss on my forehead. “You are amazing, Serena. Thank you. Thank you for this.”

I smiled, reaching out to gently touch Isabella’s incredibly small, delicate fingers. “We did it.”

The hospital door opened, and Elena walked in, holding a very excited Nico by the hand.

“Is she here? Is she here?” Nico demanded in a loud whisper, rushing over to the bed.

Lucian chuckled, carefully lowering his arms so Nico could see his new baby sister. Nico’s eyes went wide with awe. He reached out and gently poked her tiny cheek.

“She’s so little,” Nico declared, looking up at his father. “I have to protect her now.”

Lucian’s eyes softened with a devastatingly beautiful pride. He placed his free hand on Nico’s shoulder. “We both will, buddy. Always.”

I watched my family. I thought about the terrified girl who had clutched a hospital bedrail four years ago, believing her life had shattered into pieces. That girl felt like a stranger now.

In her place was a matriarch. A woman who had stared down billionaires, outsmarted assassins, and redeemed the darkest man in New York City simply by demanding the truth.

I looked out the hospital window at the glittering skyline of Manhattan. The city would always be ruthless. It would always be fast. There would always be monsters in the dark.

But I was no longer afraid of the shadows.

Lucian shifted Isabella to one arm and reached out, lacing his fingers securely through mine. His grip was warm, strong, and eternal.

We had taken the broken pieces of a betrayal and forged them into a fortress. We hadn't just survived the storm. We had built an empire of light, love, and absolute safety.

And looking at my husband and my children, I knew with absolute certainty that this empire was going to last forever.
