Chapter 17 - The Blood Covenant

The Plaza ballroom emptied with terrifying speed. Under the guise of a hotel emergency, Elena rushed Nico and Isabella down the secure service elevator, flanked by five of Lucian’s most lethal guards.

I refused to leave.

I stood in the center of the vast, empty ballroom. Lucian stood beside me, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. The silence in the room was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic, taunting click-clack of Dominic’s silver-tipped cane against the marble floor as he slowly circled us.

"Ten years, Lucian," Dominic mused, pouring himself a glass of champagne from an abandoned tray. "I let you believe I burned in that Maserati so I could evade the European task force. I gifted you the throne. I watched from the shadows as you built our family’s name into a legend of fear."

Dominic took a sip, grimacing slightly before tossing the crystal glass aside. It shattered against the wall.

"And what do you do with my gift?" Dominic snarled, dropping the polite facade. His face twisted with rage. "You fall in love with a civilian. You develop a conscience. You dismantle the greatest syndicate on the East Coast and trade it for... charitygalas and diaper bags."

"I legitimized our name," Lucian fired back, his voice vibrating with a lethal, barely contained violence. "I scrubbed the blood off our ledger. I built an empire that can never be taken away by the feds or rival families. You are a relic, Dominic. A ghost. You have no power here."

"Oh, little brother," Dominic laughed, a dry, scraping sound. "Legitimate money is the sweetest prize of all. You've done all the hard work for me. You washed the billions. You secured the commercial real estate. You built a fortress. And now, I am going to take it."

"You don't own a single share of Moretti Holdings," I said, my voice cutting through the tension like a blade.

Dominic finally turned his full attention to me. He looked me up and down, a patronizing smirk on his lips. "Ah. The famous Serena. The woman who tamed the beast. The matriarch of the new era. You are very beautiful, my dear. But you are vastly out of your depth."

"I am exactly where I belong," I replied, lifting my chin, refusing to yield an inch of ground.

"We will see about that," Dominic said, pulling a sleek, encrypted hard drive from his pocket. He tossed it onto the nearest cocktail table. "You think your foundation is an impenetrable fortress of clean money? You think The Haven is untouchable?"

My heart skipped a beat.

"Five years ago, before you had your great moral awakening," Dominic continued, looking at Lucian, "you transferred fifty million dollars of seed money to establish Serena’s little charity. You thought you cleaned it through a shell company in the Caymans. But I controlled the routing hub. That fifty million dollars came directly from a human trafficking ring in Milan."

The air was sucked violently from my lungs. I looked at Lucian. His face was a mask of absolute horror.

"If I hand this drive to the FBI," Dominic smiled, savoring our shock, "the federal government will seize The Haven by tomorrow morning. Your foundation will be publicly branded as a money-laundering front for a trafficking ring. You will lose the buildings, the trust, and your precious reputation. And Serena, as the CEO, will face a twenty-year mandatory minimum for international fraud."

"You would destroy your own family’s legacy?" Lucian whispered, stepping forward, his hands twitching toward a weapon he no longer carried.

"I am reclaiming my legacy," Dominic corrected sharply. "Here is the deal. You transfer fifty-one percent of Moretti Holdings into my offshore trust by Friday. You step down as CEO, and you hand me the keys to the kingdom. If you do, the drive disappears. If you refuse, I burn your wife and her charity to the ground."

Dominic tipped his head, offering a mocking bow. "Happy Christening, Serena. Welcome to the real family."

He turned and walked out of the ballroom, his cane clicking against the marble, leaving us standing in the wreckage of our perfect day.

Lucian turned to me, his eyes filled with a desperate, agonizing guilt. He reached out, his hands trembling as he touched my face. "Serena. I didn't know the origin of those specific funds. I swear to you. I thought the seed money was clean."

"I know," I said softly, placing my hands over his. I didn't pull away. I didn't scream.

"I have to give him the company," Lucian choked out, tears of defeat burning in his eyes. "I don't care about the money. I will give him everything I have to keep you out of a federal prison. I won't let him touch you."

"Lucian, listen to me," I said, my voice dropping to a fierce, unyielding register. "If you give him fifty-one percent, he becomes the majority shareholder. He will use our legitimate infrastructure to rebuild his criminal syndicate. He will turn our clean empire back into a slaughterhouse. We cannot give him the keys."

"Then what do we do?!" Lucian demanded, the panic breaking through. "He has the proof! He has the routing numbers! If he goes to the FBI, you lose The Haven!"

I looked at the hard drive sitting on the cocktail table. I thought about the thousands of women and children sleeping safely in our sanctuaries. I thought about my daughter, christened today in the light, and my son, who believed his parents were invincible.

"He thinks leverage is power," I said, a cold, dangerous smile slowly spreading across my face. "He thinks he can use our secrets to hold us hostage in the dark."

May you like

I picked up the hard drive.

"We aren't going to wait for him to go to the FBI," I told my husband, my eyes locking onto his. "We are going to go to them first. We are going to burn this secret to the ground ourselves."
