Chapter 4 - The Architecture of Ruin

While Evan, his pregnant mistress, and his mother were being unceremoniously frog-marched out of the house by armed guards, carrying trash bags filled with whatever clothes they could frantically grab in thirty minutes, the true devastation of my retaliation was only just beginning.

Evan assumed he could simply take Marissa to a luxury hotel and use his corporate salary to fight me in court. He assumed his wealth would protect him.

He didn't realize that I had spent the last six months mapping his financial existence.

Evan was a senior partner at a logistics firm. What he conveniently never realized was that the primary venture capital group that funded his firm’s expansion three years ago was a subsidiary holding company quietly controlled by my grandfather’s estate.

When Evan pulled his Mercedes into the hotel parking lot and handed the valet his black American Express card, it was immediately declined.

Panicked, he logged into his corporate banking app. The accounts were frozen.

I received the frantic, hysterical phone call at 10:15 AM.

"Claire! What the hell are you doing?!" Evan screamed into the phone, the sound of downtown traffic roaring in the background. "My cards are frozen! I can't access the joint accounts! The firm just suspended my corporate access! You are destroying my life over a house!"

"I am not destroying your life over a house, Evan," I said, my voice echoing with an absolute, uncompromising authority as I sat on the balcony of my penthouse suite. "I am destroying your life because you looked our daughter in the eye while your mother handed my house keys to your pregnant mistress, and you did absolutely nothing."

"Claire, please!" Evan begged, his voice cracking, the arrogant patriarch completely reduced to a weeping, pathetic coward. "Marissa is pregnant! We have nowhere to go! My mother is having palpitations in the hotel lobby!"

"Then I highly suggest you take her to a public clinic," I replied flawlessly. "You committed gross fiduciary fraud by funneling marital funds to purchase jewelry and hotel rooms for your mistress. I submitted the forensic audit to your firm's board of directors this morning. They fired you for cause, Evan. You have no house. You have no job. You have no money."

"You’re a monster," he sobbed.

"No," I whispered, staring out at the city I now completely controlled. "I am a landlord. And your lease is permanently canceled."
