Chapter 5 - The Renovation
Six months later, the brutal Chicago winter had melted into a bright, promising spring.
I stood in the driveway of my estate, watching the final landscaping crew plant a row of vibrant white hydrangeas along the front walkway. The house had been completely renovated. The guest room they had arrogantly measured for a nursery was now a state-of-the-art art studio for Sophie. The kitchen where they had toasted to my departure had been entirely gutted and rebuilt to my exact specifications.
The divorce was finalized with spectacular speed. Faced with irrefutable evidence of his embezzlement, infidelity, and total financial ruin, Evan surrendered completely. He signed away all claims to the marital estate to avoid federal fraud charges. He was awarded highly restricted, alternating weekend visitation with the children, ordered to pay child support from his new, minimum-wage administrative job.
Marissa, realizing with terrifying clarity that she had hitched her wagon to a disgraced, bankrupt pariah instead of a wealthy executive, had abandoned him two months after the eviction. She moved back in with her parents, leaving Evan entirely alone in a cramped, dark apartment on the outskirts of the city. Diane was forced to move into a modest retirement facility, stripped of the country club lifestyle she had so desperately clung to.
The heavy oak front doors opened, and Sophie and Noah ran out onto the lawn, laughing as they chased our new golden retriever puppy through the grass.
