Chapter 3 - The Reversal

Margaret stared at the signed document as if I had just placed a live grenade on the table.
"You didn't even read the terms," Emma blurted out, lowering her phone slightly, her script completely ruined. "You're just... signing it?"
"I don't need to read it, Emma," I replied, standing up to my full height. "Because I don't want anything from this family. In fact, I've been trying to figure out how to afford a lawyer to get out of this miserable marriage for three months. You just saved me the retainer fee. Thank you, Margaret. This is the best birthday gift you could have possibly given me."
David lowered his phone, the red recording dot finally disappearing. His face was pale. "What are you talking about? You have nothing."
"I have a lot more than you think," I said.
I reached into my purse one last time and pulled out the crisp, white envelope I had been carrying all day. I dropped it directly on top of the divorce papers.
"What is that?" Margaret snapped, her perfect composure beginning to fray at the edges.

"That is an employment contract," I answered cheerfully. "For the Guest Services Coordinator position at the Grand Plaza Hotel. The management track. It comes with full benefits and executive housing."
Margaret’s jaw actually dropped. The Grand Plaza was her territory. It was where she hosted her charity galas, where she drank her afternoon tea, where she demanded the staff treat her like royalty. And starting in two weeks, I would be the one holding the keys to the VIP suites and managing the event spaces.
