"You... the Grand Plaza?" Margaret stammered, the reality hitting her. She would have to see my face every time she wanted to book a ballroom. She would have to ask me for favors.

"Yes," I smiled. "And since the position includes executive housing, I already signed the paperwork to remove my name from the lease on our apartment this morning, David. Which means you are now solely responsible for the $3,400 a month rent. I hope your mother is feeling generous."

David looked at his mother in absolute panic. "Mom, you said she'd fight it! You said she'd demand a payout!"

"I don't want your money, David," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the quiet restaurant. "I just wanted my life back. And now I have it."

Mr. Romano had stepped out from behind the counter. Maria and Tony were standing near the kitchen doors. They had heard enough.

"Is there a problem here, Jenny?" Mr. Romano asked, his voice deep and protective, crossing his massive arms over his apron.

"No problem, Mr. Romano," I smiled warmly at the man who had treated me more like family than my actual in-laws ever had. "Just finishing up."
