Chapter 8 - The Shadow LedgerTo hack an impenetrable fortress, you don't break down the front door. You use the rat that lives in the walls.

"Brooke is a sociopath, Adrian," I explained, pacing the length of the boardroom, my mind operating with surgical precision. "She doesn't do anything out of loyalty, and she certainly doesn't trust a woman like Evelyn to actually pay her once the deed is done. If Brooke signed a perjured affidavit, she kept an insurance policy."

"An insurance policy?" Adrian asked, his venture-capitalist mind instantly catching up to my strategy.

"Blackmail," I smiled. "Brooke would never sign a false confession without secretly recording Evelyn offering the bribe. She’s too paranoid. She has the proof that Evelyn orchestrated this entire frame-up."

"But Brooke is in a federal supermax facility," Adrian noted, bringing up the prison schematics on the smart-board. "Her communications are entirely monitored. She couldn't have smuggled a recording out."

"She didn't smuggle it out," I deduced, my eyes hardening into diamonds. "She uploaded it. When Brooke was negotiating this deal with Evelyn, she would have insisted on a video call to verify the Cayman Island routing numbers. Brooke recorded that call, and she hid the file."

I turned to our lead cyber-forensics hacker, a brilliant, antisocial genius named Elias.

"Elias," I commanded. "Brooke’s prison limits internet access to a heavily monitored internal educational portal. But Brooke isn't a hacker. She’s an influencer. She hides things in plain sight. I want you to tear through the metadata of every single digital asset associated with Brooke’s old social media accounts from the week Evelyn visited her."

For the next six hours, our boardroom operated on pure, high-stakes adrenaline. Outside, the federal agents waited, assuming we were drafting our surrender. Inside, we were building a guillotine.

At 10:00 P.M., Elias hit the jackpot.

"Got it," Elias breathed, his eyes wide with shock. "Brooke didn't upload it to a server. She embedded an encrypted audio file into the metadata of an old Instagram photo on her archived account. A photo of her and Evelyn from a gala five years ago."

"Decrypt it," Adrian rumbled, stepping behind Elias’s chair.

The progress bar flashed green. An audio recording began to play through the boardroom speakers.

Evelyn’s voice: "You sign the affidavit stating Adrian ordered the Volkov hit, and I transfer ten million to your offshore account. The DOJ will eat it up. You get your revenge on your sister, and I get Callahan Industries."

Brooke’s voice: "And if the DOJ finds out the trust documents you used to steal the company are forged?"

Evelyn’s voice: "They won't. The Geneva notary was paid very well to backdate the signatures. Just sign the paper, Brooke. Let me handle the feds."

The recording ended. A profound, victorious fire ignited in my chest. Evelyn hadn't just committed extortion; she had confessed to massive federal fraud, bribery, and conspiracy on tape.

"Download the entire file," I commanded, pulling my tailored blazer over my shoulders. "Evelyn wants to play in the major leagues? Let’s invite her to the World Series."
