Chapter 1 - The Anniversary Slap

My sister-in-law slapped me at my own anniversary dinner while my eight-year-old daughter watched.

For a second, nobody moved.

My cheek burned. My six-year-old son sat frozen with his fork in his hand.

Across the table, Rebecca Dawson stared at me like she had every right to humiliate me inside my own home.

“You serve Mom before you sit down,” she said. “You’ve been part of this family long enough to know that.”

I didn’t answer her.

I looked at my husband.

Michael was sitting beside me, staring at his plate.

For twelve years, I had watched him do the same thing whenever his family mistreated me.

His mother, Carol, criticized my parenting.

Rebecca mocked my career.

They borrowed money, expected favors, and acted as though the house I had purchased was somehow theirs.

And Michael always wanted peace.

“Are you going to say anything?” I asked.

He finally looked at me.

“Laura, please. Let’s not make tonight worse.”

That was the moment something inside me changed.

I wasn’t heartbroken anymore.

I was finished.

I slowly placed my napkin beside my plate, stood, leaned across the table—

and slapped Rebecca back.

Her mouth dropped open.

Michael shot to his feet.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

I almost laughed.

His sister had hit his wife in front of his children, and he had remained silent.

But the moment I defended myself, suddenly he had a voice.

I looked straight at him.

“A husband who watches his wife get slapped in her own house and asks her to stay quiet doesn’t deserve a wife.”

“You’re angry,” Michael said.

“No. I’ve been angry for twelve years.”

I turned toward my children.

“Sophie, grab your coat. Ethan, get your backpack.”

Michael stepped in front of me.

“You’re not taking them.”

I met his eyes.

“Move.”

May you like

Something in my voice made him step aside.

I walked out holding both of my children’s hands.
