Chapter 3 - The Slow Disappearance

For the first few years, Michael and I were genuinely happy.
We lived in a small apartment.
We ate takeout on the floor.
He worked on building designs at our kitchen table while I struggled to grow my interior design company.
When Sophie was born, Michael cried while holding her.
When I landed my first major corporate contract, he bought cheap champagne and danced with me in our kitchen.
I kept remembering that man every time the husband he became disappointed me.
The first warning came during Thanksgiving.
Rebecca tasted the meal I had spent all day preparing and smiled.
“It’s adorable how hard you try to impress us.”
Carol laughed quietly.
I waited for Michael to defend me.
Instead, he changed the subject.
That became our marriage.
Rebecca insulted me.
Carol encouraged her.
