Chapter 5 - The Withdrawal

The following morning, I met with my attorney.

Then I called my accountant.

The payments covering Carol’s restaurant mortgage stopped.

The business credit line Rebecca used was canceled.

The catering expansion I had personally guaranteed would receive no further funding.

And the house where they had humiliated me?

It was legally mine.

By the end of the week, Michael came to see me.

His face was pale.

“My mother says the bank called.”

“I’m sure they did.”

“Rebecca says the catering company may collapse.”

I nodded.

“You have to fix this.”

I stared at the man who had asked me to remain silent after his sister struck me.

“No, Michael.”

“They’re my family.”

“I know.”

“Then how can you do this?”

I smiled sadly.

“I’m not doing anything to them.”

I picked up my divorce papers.

“I simply stopped doing everything for them.”

For twelve years, Michael’s family had mistaken my generosity for weakness.

Rebecca thought she was teaching me my place when she slapped me.

Instead, she reminded me exactly where my place was.

Not beneath their family.

Not behind my husband.

And never again at a table where I had to pay for the privilege of being disrespected.
