Chapter 13 - Digging the Grave

For the next week, Julian and I turned the top floor of his corporate headquarters into a war room.
Victoria Croft thought she was untouchable because her family had old money. But old money usually meant old, lazy habits. And Nathan Cole was the laziest man I had ever met.
Julian’s forensic accountants worked around the clock, digging into the public tax filings, vendor registrations, and offshore routing numbers connected to Croft & Vanguard. Because Nathan was a creature of habit, I knew exactly what to look for.
It was 2:00 AM on a Thursday. The city below was a quiet sea of glittering lights. I was sitting on the floor surrounded by printed ledgers, an empty coffee cup beside me. Julian was on the sofa, loosening his tie, reading through a stack of legal briefs.
"I found it," I whispered, the words echoing in the silent room.
Julian immediately stood up and walked over, crouching down beside me. "Show me."
I pointed to a series of highlighted transactions. "When Nathan stole from me, he used a network of fake catering LLCs. Look at Victoria’s recent vendor payouts for the last quarter. She transferred over two million dollars to a material sourcing company called 'Apex Design Logistics.'"
"I’ve never heard of them," Julian frowned.
"Nobody has," I said, my heart racing. "Because they don't exist. I ran the tax ID number. It’s a ghost company registered to a P.O. Box in Delaware. But look at the signature on the authorization forms."
Julian leaned in closer. "Nathan Cole."
"Victoria isn't just trying to sabotage my business," I breathed, the sheer magnitude of the crime crystallizing in my mind. "Her firm is going bankrupt. She is embezzling funds from her own investors to hide her losses, and she hired Nathan to physically sign off on the fake invoices."
"She made him the primary signatory," Julian realized, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "So when the federal auditors inevitably catch the discrepancy..."
"Nathan takes the fall," I finished. "He goes to federal prison for corporate embezzlement, and Victoria claims she was the victim of a rogue project manager."
Julian looked at me. The respect in his eyes was absolute. "He really has no idea he’s digging his own grave."
"No," I said, slowly gathering the papers. "He thinks he finally found a woman who respects his genius. He thinks he’s a partner."
"Do we warn him?" Julian asked quietly.
I thought about the twelve years of emotional starvation. I thought about the time he let his sister slap me. I thought about his threat to take Lily and Owen away from me just three days ago.
You cannot save a man who actively chooses to jump off a cliff just to prove he can fly.

"No," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "We don't warn him. We hand the shovel to the FBI."
