Chapter 14 - The Architectural Summit

The National Architectural Summit was the most prestigious event of the year. Held at the Waldorf Astoria, it was a glittering, high-society affair where the industry’s elite gathered to hand out awards and network.
Victoria Croft was scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award.
I arrived with Julian on my arm. I wore a backless, sweeping gown of midnight blue silk. I did not hide in the corners. I did not avoid eye contact. We walked directly into the center of the ballroom, and the crowd parted for us like the Red Sea.
Victoria was standing near the stage, surrounded by journalists and sycophants. Nathan stood awkwardly a few feet behind her, holding her coat. He looked like an oversized, pathetic servant.
When Victoria saw me, her fake smile tightened. She couldn't resist the opportunity for a public victory lap. She marched over to us, dragging a bewildered Nathan with her.
"Emily, Julian," Victoria purred loudly, ensuring the nearby reporters could hear. "I’m surprised you showed up. I heard Hayes Home Studio is suffering from some terrible supply chain issues. Such a shame when small businesses bite off more than they can chew."
Julian didn't say a word. He just smiled, swirling the bourbon in his glass, letting me take the lead.
"We are doing perfectly fine, Victoria," I replied, my voice projecting clearly. "In fact, I wanted to personally congratulate you on your latest financial maneuvers. It takes a lot of creativity to move two million dollars through a phantom logistics company in Delaware."
Victoria’s face completely froze. The champagne glass in her hand trembled. "I have no idea what you’re talking about."
Nathan frowned, looking confused. "Emily, stop making things up because you lost a few vendors."
"I’m not making anything up, Nathan," I said, turning my gaze to him. I looked at him with genuine, clinical pity. "Did you ever actually read the invoices Victoria had you sign last week for Apex Design Logistics?"
Nathan’s brow furrowed. "Of course I did. It was for imported textiles."
"Apex doesn't exist, Nathan," I stated, the absolute truth hanging in the air like a guillotine. "Victoria is embezzling from her investors. And she made sure your name was on every single fraudulent wire transfer. You aren't her project manager. You are her human shield."
Nathan turned pale, looking wildly at Victoria. "Victoria? What is she talking about?"
Victoria’s composure shattered. "Security! Remove this woman! She is harassing me!"
"I wouldn't yell too loudly, Ms. Croft," a new voice interrupted.
The crowd parted again. A team of four federal FBI agents in dark suits walked directly onto the ballroom floor. The music abruptly stopped. The flashbulbs of the press cameras went into a frantic overdrive.
"Victoria Croft and Nathan Cole," the lead agent said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "You are both under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."
Nathan stumbled backward, pure terror washing over his face. He looked at the agents, then at Victoria, and finally, desperately, at me.
"Emily! Emily, please tell them! Tell them I didn't know!" he begged, his voice cracking as an agent grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "Please! Help me!"
I stood perfectly still. The man who had demanded my silence for twelve years was finally screaming for my help.
"I can't help you, Nathan," I said softly, but loud enough for him to hear over the chaos. "I am too busy protecting my peace."
I turned my back on him as the handcuffs clicked shut. I didn't watch them drag him out of the ballroom. I didn't care to witness the final, pathetic collapse of his ego.
I looked at Julian. He offered me his arm, his eyes shining with absolute reverence.
"Care for a dance, Ms. Hayes?" Julian asked.
"I would love to, Mr. Sterling," I smiled.

We walked onto the dance floor, leaving the ghosts of my past entirely behind us in the ashes of their own making.
