Chapter 3 - The Evidence at the Dining Table

Three weeks before the anniversary dinner, I installed discreet cameras inside the house.

At first, I did it because a pair of earrings disappeared from my bedroom after Judith visited.

Then cash went missing from my office drawer.

I did not accuse anyone.

I simply installed cameras in the hallway, kitchen, office, and dining room.

The footage gave me answers I never wanted.

Judith entering my office while I was at a client meeting.

Vanessa opening files on my desk.

Nathan sitting at the dining table with them late at night, practicing my signature on printed documents.

But the recording that destroyed any remaining doubt happened two weeks before the anniversary dinner.

I was upstairs helping Lily with homework.

They thought I was asleep.

Nathan, Judith, and Vanessa sat at the same walnut table where Vanessa would later slap me.

Vanessa held up a loan application.

“Are you sure she will not notice?”

Nathan leaned back in his chair.

“She never checks the accounts closely.”

Judith smiled.

“She is too emotional when it comes to family. That is why she has always been easy to manage.”

My hands shook as I watched.

Then Vanessa asked the question that changed everything.

“What happens if Emily refuses?”

Nathan did not hesitate.

“Then we make her look irresponsible. She has been stressed lately. Crying. Losing sleep. We can say she is unstable after all the pressure with the kids and the business.”

Judith nodded.

“And once she agrees to sign over the house as collateral, we can stabilize the catering company.”

Vanessa laughed.

“She will do it. She always does.”

I stopped the recording.

At three in the morning, I sat in the dark office with tears running silently down my face.

Not because I was surprised Nathan had taken money.

Not because Judith and Vanessa planned to use my home.

But because they knew I was struggling.

They saw my exhaustion.

They saw the way I worried about Lily and Owen.

They saw every moment I felt alone.

And instead of helping me, they planned to use my pain against me.

Monica filed emergency motions immediately.

She froze the business accounts connected to Nathan’s company and Cole Family Catering.

She notified the bank that my signature had been forged.

She sent the security footage to forensic accountants and law enforcement.

And she filed for temporary custody protections for Lily and Owen.

Nathan found out at his office.

His business accounts were frozen before noon.

His partners received an email from the bank requesting information about unauthorized transfers.

By one o’clock, he was calling me again.

This time, he sounded frightened.

“Emily, please. You do not understand.”

“I understand that you stole from me.”

“I borrowed money.”

“You forged my name.”

“I was going to fix it.”

“You were going to take my house.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “My family needed help.”

I looked at the photographs of Lily and Owen on the wall of my parents’ guest room.

“And what did your family think my children needed?”

He had no answer.

Because the truth was unbearable.

They did not see me as family.

They saw me as a resource.
