Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the DoorEvelyn froze, her hand still raised in the air. She turned her head sharply toward the high entryway, her expression morphing from arrogant victory into sudden, paranoid confusion.

"What is that noise?" she hissed, looking around frantically. "Did security forget to lock the main gates again?"

"Help! In the grand hall! Help us!" I screamed, praying to God that it was a delivery driver, a gardener, anyone who could stop this nightmare.

"Be quiet, you foolish girl!" Evelyn snapped, kicking my leg. "No one can hear you from the front driveway anyway."

But then, the footsteps started. They were firm, deliberate, and heavy, resonating against the marble foyer just beyond the oak-floored hall. The rhythmic cadence of expensive leather shoes striking the stone floor was entirely too confident, too powerful to be a servant or a lost delivery man. A long, dark shadow fell across the white crown molding at the edge of the doorway. It was a tall, incredibly commanding presence.

"Who is out there?" Evelyn yelled, her voice trembling slightly. "This is private property! I will call the police!"

The footsteps stopped abruptly right at the threshold of the grand hallway. Evelyn took a slow, shaky step backward. I watched as her eyes darted down the brightly lit corridor. Instantly, her pupils dilated with sheer, unadulterated horror. All the color drained from her face until she looked as pale as a ghost. The smug, vicious smile she had worn just seconds ago vanished completely, replaced by a trembling lip and wide, terrified eyes that stared into the doorway in complete disbelief.

"Evelyn?" I whispered, my voice shaking. "What’s wrong with you? Who is standing there?"

"It… it can’t be," Evelyn stammered, her breath catching in her throat. She stumbled backward, nearly tripping over her own expensive heels. "That’s impossible. Victor…?"

I gasped, whipping my head around.

Standing in the doorway of the grand hall, bathed in the bright sunlight, was a tall, fair-skinned American man. He was clad in a sharp, immaculate dark grey custom suit. His broad shoulders filled the frame of the door, his jaw set like pure iron. His dark eyes burned with an intense, furious, terrifying glare that was focused entirely on my sister. He didn’t look like a man who had been lost at sea for six months. He didn't look like a victim. He looked like an absolute king who had returned home to reclaim his kingdom, carrying an air of absolute authority that chilled the massive room instantly.

"Victor?" I breathed, my heart stopping in my chest.

"Don’t move," Victor’s voice boomed through the hall, deep, resonant, and dripping with raw fury.

"Victor… you’re alive?" Evelyn choked out, her hands shaking violently. "How are you here? The Coast Guard said..."

"I said do not move a single inch, Evelyn," Victor commanded, taking a slow, predatory step into the room.

"Victor! Oh my god, Victor!" I sobbed, the tears flowing freely now—tears of absolute relief and overwhelming joy.

He didn't take his furious eyes off Evelyn, but his voice softened for just a fraction of a second. "Stay down, Clara. Stay right where you are with our son. I've got you."

Evelyn held her hands up defensively, her brilliant legal mind desperately trying to spin the situation. "Victor, listen to me, this isn’t what it looks like! I swear! Clara was having a mental breakdown. She collapsed and was going to hurt the baby, I was just trying to save him!"

"Do you really think I am going to listen to your pathetic lies after what I just witnessed?" Victor growled, taking another step forward. "You were dragging my wife and child across the floor like animals in my own house."
