Chapter 4 - The Boardroom BacklashI sobbed with profound relief, pulling my baby even closer as tears washed over the red marks Evelyn had left on my cheek. The baby, sensing the sudden, powerful shift in the room's energy, went completely silent, watching his father walk closer.

Evelyn backed away until her spine hit the wall beneath the grand framed American flag painting. She was trapped. "The police… the lawyers told me your plane was gone!" she babbled hysterically. "They said there were no survivors in the ocean! We had a memorial service!"

"I survived the crash, Evelyn," Victor said coldly, stopping in the center of the hall. His dark grey suit caught the bright daylight, casting a long shadow right over my fallen white pearl earring. "I washed up on a remote shore and spent weeks in a private, undisclosed hospital. And when I finally recovered enough to make a call, I spent the last three weeks watching you in secret, just to see what you would do to my family when you thought I was dead."

"I was keeping the family business safe for you!" Evelyn cried, pointing a trembling finger. "I bought the corporate stock to protect the estate from hostile takeovers! I was protecting your legacy!"

"You bought the stock using stolen offshore accounts that belonged to my private trust fund," Victor stated, his voice like cracking ice.

Evelyn’s mouth dropped open. "That’s… that’s not true! I used my own savings!"

"My forensic accountants cleared that up two days ago. I know every single transaction you made, Evelyn. I know about the wire transfers to the Cayman Islands. I know about the shell companies."

"Please, Victor," Evelyn begged, her knees practically buckling. "We’re family! You can’t do this to me! I worked for the company for ten years while Clara just stayed home!"

"She stayed home to raise our child! And you repaid her by attempting to steal her home and throw her in an asylum!" Victor yelled, his voice echoing like thunder. "You forfeited your right to call yourself family the moment you laid a hand on my wife."

"Father was going to give me the estate!" Evelyn screamed, dropping the act entirely, her face twisting into an ugly mask of pure jealousy. "She manipulated him into changing the will right before he passed away! I deserved this mansion! I earned it!"

"That is a complete lie, Evelyn, and you know it," I spoke up, finding my courage now that my husband was standing over me. "Father changed the will because he found out you were quietly embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the charitable trust!"

"Shut up, Clara!" Evelyn hissed.

"Do not speak to her like that ever again," Victor warned, stepping dangerously close to her. "You are finished in this house, and you are finished in the corporate world."

Evelyn puffed out her chest, trying to muster one last shred of defiance. "You can’t kick me out! I still hold the board seats! I am the majority shareholder!"

Victor let out a dark, humorless laugh. "As of eight o’clock this morning, the federal court issued an emergency freezing order on all assets associated with those shares. Your accounts are zeroed out, Evelyn."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been physically shot. The reality of her financial ruin crashed down on her all at once. The blue designer dress she wore suddenly looked like a cheap costume.

"An emergency order? On what grounds?" she whispered.

"Fraud, grand larceny, and corporate espionage. The federal agents have been monitoring your bank accounts for two solid weeks," Victor replied.

"You brought the authorities into our family matters?"

May you like

"You stopped treating this as a family matter when you brought fake custody papers to my home. And those two expensive doctors you paid to sign Clara's false medical paperwork? I spoke to them this morning. They have already surrendered their medical licenses to avoid federal prosecution."

Evelyn slid slowly down the wall, collapsing into a pathetic heap on the floor. Her master plan, years in the making, had been systematically dismantled and destroyed in less than twenty-four hours.
