Chapter 1 - The Armored Cage

The interior of the matte-black SUV was suffocatingly warm, a stark contrast to the freezing Oregon rain beating against the reinforced windows. It smelled of rich, conditioned leather and the dark, lingering notes of sandalwood—the exact scent that had haunted Clara’s nightmares for four brutal years.
She sat rigidly in the back seat, pulling Jack and Noah close against her damp diner uniform. The boys, exhausted and terrified by the sudden violence of their world shifting, stared wide-eyed at the glowing digital dashboard and the tinted glass that separated them from everything they knew. Opposite them, consuming all the remaining oxygen in the cabin, sat Matteo.
He didn't look at the passing streetlights. He looked only at them. His ash-gray eyes traced the sharp angles of Clara’s cheekbones, hollowed out by years of double shifts and skipped meals, before dropping to the twins. When he looked at his sons, the impenetrable, lethal mask of the Mafia Boss fractured entirely, revealing a raw, bleeding wound beneath.
"Four years," Matteo finally said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that barely carried over the heavy hum of the engine. "You robbed me of their first steps. Their first words. You erased me from their existence, Clara."
"I protected them," Clara shot back, her voice shaking but fiercely defiant. She pulled her worn coat tighter around the boys, a physical shield against his anger. "I protected them from a man who couldn't even keep his vows sacred in his own home."
Matteo’s jaw locked. The muscles in his neck pulled taut against the collar of his charcoal shirt. "My vows to you were the only sacred thing I ever possessed. You convicted me without a trial."

"I didn't need a trial! I had my own eyes!" Clara's voice broke, the suppressed agony of the last four years violently bubbling to the surface. "I saw her, Matteo. I saw my own sister pinned against your desk, her hair everywhere, the two of you..."
"You saw an execution, Clara," Matteo interrupted, the absolute coldness in his tone instantly freezing the air in the cabin. "Not an affair."
