"Then command your driver to take us to the airfield," Clara stated, her voice steady and commanding, fully embracing the authority he had just handed her. "My sons are tired of the rain, and I am tired of this town."

Matteo chuckled, a dark, rich sound that vibrated through her chest, before tapping the glass partition to relay the order.

As the fleet of armored SUVs merged onto the dark, rain-slicked highway, leaving the rusted station wagon and the damp, broken town behind in the rearview mirror, Clara looked down at her sleeping boys. The misunderstanding had cost her four years of luxury, but it had forged her into iron. She was returning to the violent, opulent world of the Chicago syndicate, but she was no longer the naive wife walking blindly through its halls.

She rested her head against the broad chest of the King of Chicago, closing her eyes as the heater finally chased the last of the Oregon cold from her bones. Clara knew she was going home, not as a captive, not as a victim, but as a Queen who held the absolute power to rule the man who ruled the city.
