Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Misunderstanding

Clara stopped breathing. "What?"
Matteo leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, closing the physical distance between them.
"If you want to understand the exact anatomy of the tragedy that destroyed our family, you only need to look at the file 10_2.jpg," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a harsh, devastated whisper. "The top frame captures your nightmare flawlessly—you standing in the doorway, covering your mouth in horror, watching what you believed was an intimate, unforgivable embrace. The bottom frame captures the unbearable consequence—you, pregnant and alone in an airport terminal, believing you were leaving a monster behind while I am standing just yards away, desperately searching for a ghost. But your eyes lied to you, Clara. Just like your sister did."
He reached into the inner pocket of his wool coat and pulled out a heavy, silver pendant. It was the exact same pendant Clara had bought for her sister's twenty-first birthday. He tossed it onto the empty leather seat next to her.
"I wasn't holding her in a lover's embrace," Matteo explained, his gaze boring into hers with piercing intensity. "I was physically restraining her because she was in the middle of robbing my syndicate."
Clara stared at the silver necklace, her mind struggling to process the jagged edges of this impossible new reality. "Robbing you? Why would she..."
"Because she was an addict," Matteo stated bluntly. "Not drugs. Gambling. She had racked up four hundred thousand dollars in debt at an underground casino run by the Moretti family. They told her that if she didn't pay by midnight, they would take her fingers. So, she came into my study while I was in the shower. She bypassed the secondary alarm and opened the floor safe."
Matteo listed the brutal facts of that night with mechanical, agonizing precision:
The Discovery: "I walked into the study and caught her stuffing syndicate ledgers and a quarter-million in unmarked cash into her duffel bag."

The Struggle: "She panicked. She tried to run. I slammed her against the desk to disarm her because she pulled a velvet-handled letter opener from my drawer and aimed it at my throat."
The Aftermath: "I was pinning her down, twisting the blade out of her hand, right when you opened the door. By the time I stripped the stolen goods from her and turned around to find you, the hallway was empty. And you were gone."
