Chapter 11: The Groundbreaking
The next morning, the sky over the Seattle harbor was a brilliant, unclouded blue. It was the perfect day for a groundbreaking.
The site of the Bluehaven Defense Project was swarming with construction crews, government officials, and press. The massive seawall and defensive infrastructure that would protect the city for the next century was finally beginning.
Evelyn stood on the VIP podium, wearing a pristine white hardhat and a tailored navy trench coat. Senator Hayes stood to her left, and Julian stood to her right.
"Today, we do not just break ground on a project," Senator Hayes announced to the crowd, speaking into the microphone. "We break ground on a new era of integrity, brilliance, and security. And none of it would be possible without the true visionary behind this architecture. Let’s welcome the Lead Architect and equity partner of Vance Coastal Dynamics, Evelyn Whitmore!"
The applause was deafening.
Evelyn stepped up to the microphone. She looked out at the massive cranes, the steel reinforcements, and the churning ocean beyond. She had designed every inch of it in the quiet, lonely hours of her past life. Now, it was roaring to life in front of her.
"For a long time, I believed that my best work had to be hidden," Evelyn spoke, her voice clear and powerful, broadcasting across the harbor. "I was taught that a strong foundation required silence. But a true foundation is built on truth. Today, we build a wall that the ocean cannot break. And we build a legacy that no lie can ever dismantle."
She picked up the silver ceremonial shovel, stepped down to the dirt, and drove it into the earth. The flashbulbs erupted. The crowd cheered.

"No, Julian," Evelyn smiled, looking at the man who had handed her the hammer to shatter her glass cage. "We did it."
