Chapter 7: The Viper's Nest

By noon, the financial markets had reacted. Mercer Development Group's stock had plummeted eighty percent.
Vanessa Cole sat in her luxury apartment, watching the news coverage with mounting horror. The life she had stolen was evaporating before her eyes. The penthouse Grant had promised her, the black-card shopping sprees, the elite status—all of it was being locked down by federal asset freezes.
Desperation is a powerful motivator. Vanessa threw open her closet and began frantically throwing designer clothes, jewelry, and whatever cash she could find into a massive suitcase. She needed to leave the city before the FBI realized she had co-signed several of Grant’s fraudulent vendor payments.
The front door of the apartment clicked open.
Vanessa froze. Grant stood in the doorway. He had been released on a massive two-million-dollar bail, posted against the remaining equity of his failing company. He looked completely unhinged.
"Going somewhere, Vanessa?" Grant snarled, stepping into the apartment and locking the door behind him.
"Grant, they froze the accounts," Vanessa stammered, backing away from the suitcase. "The lawyers said we have nothing left. I'm just... I'm trying to protect what we have!"
"You're running," Grant spat, crossing the room and grabbing her by the arm. "You wore her bracelet. You pushed me to use her blueprints! This is your fault!"
"My fault?!" Vanessa shrieked, ripping her arm away. "You're the CEO, Grant! You're the one who thought Evelyn was too weak to fight back! You bet against your own wife and lost everything!"
Grant raised his hand, fully intending to strike her, but a heavy knock on the door stopped him cold.

"Federal Marshals!" a voice boomed from the hallway. "Open the door, Ms. Cole. We have a warrant for your arrest regarding conspiracy to commit wire fraud."
Vanessa dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterically. Grant backed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, surrounded by the ruins of his own hubris. The vipers had turned on each other, and the trap had finally snapped shut.
