Chapter 2 - The Impossible Ghost

Three days later, Enzo Caruso was awake and heavily medicated in a private VIP recovery suite. Luca had not left the hospital, effectively turning the fifth floor into an impenetrable fortress guarded by men who wore expensive suits and carried concealed, suppressed weapons.

At 2:00 AM, Dr. Adriana Reyes bypassed the outer security perimeter and walked into the dim, quiet office Luca had commandeered. She did not look intimidated. She looked deeply, profoundly shaken.

She locked the door behind her and slid a sealed manila envelope across the mahogany desk.

"When a patient requires a massive, un-crossmatched transfusion of a rare blood type, hospital protocol dictates we run a secondary genetic panel on the donor blood to ensure there are no latent antibody rejections," Dr. Reyes said, her voice unusually tight.

The bottom frame of 8_2.jpg captures this exact, devastating revelation. Luca is leaning over the desk, his brow furrowed in dark concentration, staring at the physical document in his hands while Dr. Reyes watches him, realizing she has just handed a lit match to a man made of gasoline.

Luca read the numbers.

Probability of Paternity: 99.99%.

The oxygen vanished from the room.

Twelve years ago, a highly paid fertility specialist had sat across from Luca and told him his condition was absolute. Complete sterility. The Mancini bloodline ended with him. It had hollowed him out, turning him into a man with no legacy to protect, and therefore, a man with nothing left to lose.

But the paper in his hands proved the doctor had been bought. The sterility was a lie. And the woman he had loved eighteen years ago—Isabella, who had supposedly burned to death in a car crash before they could be married—had not died. She had run. She had hidden. And she had taken his child with her.

"Elena Vasquez," Luca whispered, the name tasting like ash and iron in his mouth.

"The jackknifed truck on the interstate wasn't an accident, Mr. Mancini," Dr. Reyes said quietly. "The police found incendiary residue on the truck's brake lines. They weren't trying to cause a pileup. They were trying to crush her sedan."

Luca’s eyes slowly lifted from the paper. The pieces snapped together with lethal precision. His primary rival, Victor Moretti, had ordered the hit on Enzo to distract Luca, while simultaneously ordering the truck crash to eliminate the only legitimate heir to the Mancini empire before Luca ever knew she existed.

Moretti had missed. And now, the ghost was alive.
