Chapter 3 - The Siege in the Dark

The ninety seconds of darkness stretched out into an eternity. The clinic smelled of copper, antiseptic, and the sharp, undeniable scent of impending violence. Dr. Cole moved blindly but precisely, locking the heavy deadbolt on the clinic room door and dragging a heavy metal supply cart horizontally across the threshold to create a barricade.
"Mara, I need you to stay absolutely still," Dr. Cole whispered, her hands quickly checking the IV line delivering fluids into Mara’s arm. "Your heart rate is climbing too fast. If you enter distress, the baby enters distress."
"I'm fine," Mara lied, her voice trembling but laced with a new, hardened edge. The weak, bleeding woman who had collapsed on the sidewalk an hour ago was dead. In her place was a mother who had just realized an assassin had been sleeping in her home, plotting the murder of her child. The maternal instinct, primal and absolute, began to rewrite the chemistry of her brain, replacing her terror with a cold, terrifying clarity.
The backup generators finally roared to life deep within the bowels of the building. The room was bathed in the dim, amber glow of emergency lighting, casting long, distorted shadows against the sterile walls.
From the hallway outside, the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed on the linoleum.
"Evan," a voice called out from the other side of the door. It was Evan’s voice, but stripped of all its warmth, all its humanity. It was the voice of a cornered killer. "Open the door, little brother. The police are ten minutes away, and the Calloways have spotters on the roof of the building across the street. We are out of time."
"Go to hell, Julian," Evan spat, picking up a heavy, solid-steel oxygen tank from the corner of the room, gripping it like a battering ram.
"I'm already there," Julian replied casually, the sound of a heavy metallic click echoing through the wood—the sound of a round being chambered into a handgun. "I need your ID, your wallet, and your clothes. And I need the girl dead. If I leave her alive, she tells the cops, the cops alert the syndicate, and my new identity is burned before I even cross the state line."
"You aren't touching her," Evan said, stepping in front of the bed, placing his body entirely between his wife and the wooden door.
"I really didn't want to do this the messy way," Julian sighed.
A deafening roar shattered the quiet of the clinic. The heavy wooden door splintered violently inward as Julian fired three rapid shots directly into the lock and the hinges. The metal supply cart screeched against the linoleum as the door was kicked open with devastating force.
Julian stepped into the amber light, a suppressed 9mm pistol in his hand. He looked exactly like Evan, but his eyes were dead, soulless voids. He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Dr. Cole, who froze in terror.
"Nobody moves," Julian ordered, stepping into the room. "Evan, kick the tank away. Now."
May you like
Evan hesitated, his eyes darting between the gun pointed at the doctor and his brother's face. Slowly, agonizingly, he let the heavy oxygen tank roll out of his hands, the metal clanking loudly against the floor.
"Good," Julian sneered, stepping closer, his gun shifting to point directly at Evan's chest. "Now, take off the jacket. I need the scar."
