Chapter 1: The Ambush in the Foyer

The afternoon light was streaming through the massive Palladian windows, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble floor of the grand foyer. Maria was at the end of her shift, quietly preparing to leave. She held her modest, well-worn brown leather handbag by her side, a stark contrast to the millions of dollars of art and architecture surrounding her. She was exhausted but content, looking forward to returning to her family.

Suddenly, the heavy click of designer heels echoed sharply down the sweeping dual staircase. Victoria descended like a bird of prey, her black asymmetrical cut-out dress flowing behind her. Her face was a mask of furious, manufactured outrage.

"Stop right there!" Victoria’s voice cracked through the cavernous foyer like a whip, shattering the peaceful silence.

Maria froze, turning around with a look of genuine confusion. "Ms. Victoria? Is something the matter?"

"Don't play coy with me, you thief," Victoria hissed, closing the distance between them with aggressive, predatory strides. Constance, Richard's mother, emerged from the adjacent drawing-room, her emerald green dress rustling as she stepped into the foyer. She stood in the background, her hands clasped together, watching the sudden hostility with wide, shocked eyes.

Victoria didn't wait for Maria to defend herself. With a violent lunge, she pointed a manicured finger directly at the maid’s face. "The Vanguard diamond necklace is missing from my vanity. And I know exactly where it went."

Before Maria could even process the accusation, Victoria reached out and forcefully snatched the brown leather handbag from Maria's grasp.

"Check her bag!" Victoria shrieked, though there was no one else she was commanding—she was performing for the house, creating a spectacle to ensure Maria’s absolute humiliation.

"Please, no! I haven't taken anything!" Maria cried out, her voice trembling with sudden terror. She tried to reach for her bag, but Victoria aggressively yanked it away, holding it upside down. With a vicious shake, Victoria violently emptied the contents of the modest purse directly onto the pristine marble floor. Keys, a cheap wallet, a tube of lip balm, and loose coins clattered loudly against the stone.

Victoria sneered, her blonde hair catching the light of the chandelier above. She was reveling in the power dynamic, completely intoxicated by her own cruelty. She believed she had orchestrated the perfect crime, and now she was playing the role of the righteous victim to absolute perfection.
