Chapter 4: The Digital Execution

Victoria’s heart stopped. The blood froze in her veins. The cameras.

Her eyes darted frantically around the grand foyer. The high ceilings, the sweeping staircase... she had assumed the cameras were only on the exterior of the house, to keep the outside world out. She hadn't realized that a man as powerful and paranoid as Richard Vanguard monitored the inside of his fortress just as closely.

"Richard, darling, is that really necessary?" Victoria stammered, her voice suddenly an octave higher, breathless with creeping panic. "The evidence is right here on the floor. She's obviously guilty. Let's just call the police and be done with it."

"If she's guilty, the footage will show her taking it," Richard replied coldly, gesturing to one of the security guards. "Bring the tablet."

The stoic guard stepped forward, producing a sleek, flat-screen tablet monitor. He tapped the screen a few times and handed it to Richard.

Macro monitor insert: The camera aggressively zoomed in on the glowing flat-screen display. The high-definition, black-and-white security footage played in total silence. The timestamp in the corner showed the events of exactly ten minutes prior.

On the screen, the foyer was empty. Then, Maria walked into the frame, placing her brown leather handbag on the marble table while she went into the adjacent coat closet to retrieve her jacket.

A second later, Victoria entered the frame. The black-and-white footage captured her every move with damning clarity. She looked around nervously, ensuring the coast was clear. Then, she reached into the deep pocket of her asymmetrical dress, pulled out the sparkling diamond necklace, and swiftly, secretly slipped it into the open top of Maria’s brown handbag. She then stepped back into the shadows, waiting to launch her ambush.

The video looped.

Richard stared at the screen, his face hardening into granite. The betrayal wasn't just a frame-up; it was an insult to his intelligence. He slowly lowered the monitor.

Victoria was gasping for air. The terrifying reality of her exposure was suffocating her. The smug, arrogant woman who had strutted down the stairs just moments ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered, panicked animal. Her grand plan had completely collapsed in less than sixty seconds.
