Chapter 2: The Red Dress

Before Clara could respond to Victoria’s venomous demand, the heavy, double oak doors of the living room swung open with a dramatic flourish. The sheer force of the entrance commanded the room’s attention.

Julian walked in. He looked every inch the billionaire heir, clad in a perfectly tailored dark navy suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. His hair was styled with effortless precision, and a smug, impossibly arrogant smile played on his lips. He looked like a man who had just conquered the world and was returning to claim his spoils.

But it was the woman clinging to his arm who drained the oxygen from the room.

Her name was Chloe. She was twenty-five, the daughter of a rival real estate magnate, and everything the Sterlings considered "acceptable." She was poured into a skin-tight, scandalous red dress that screamed for attention, accessorized with flashy, oversized diamond jewelry that caught the light of the chandelier. Her lips were painted a vicious crimson, pulled back into a mocking, triumphant smirk as she locked eyes with Clara.

Chloe didn't just walk in; she paraded herself. As she stepped over the threshold, she purposefully shifted her weight, heavily leaning into Julian while her perfectly manicured hand reached down to rub her own slightly rounded belly. It was a calculated, theatrical gesture designed to inflict maximum psychological damage.

"Darling, is she still here?" Chloe purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She looked at Clara as if she were inspecting a moldy piece of fruit left on the counter. "I thought you said the cleaners would have taken out the trash by the time we arrived."

Julian chuckled, a rich, dark sound that made Clara’s stomach turn. He wrapped his arm tightly around Chloe’s waist, pulling her flush against him. He didn't even have the decency to look ashamed. He looked victorious.

"She was just leaving, my love," Julian said smoothly. He finally turned his gaze to Clara, his eyes devoid of any warmth or history. The man who had once sworn to love and protect her now looked at her with utter disdain.

"She's carrying my son, Clara," Julian declared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. He pointed a firm finger toward the heavy wooden doors. "The true Sterling heir. The paperwork is on the table. You get a generous severance package—more money than your pathetic family has seen in a lifetime. Take it. Pack your bags and leave today. You don't belong here anymore."

Victoria watched the scene unfold from the sofa, a look of profound satisfaction settling over her aristocratic features. This was the natural order of things. The strong discard the weak. The wealthy upgrade their assets. Clara was obsolete, being replaced by a newer, shinier model who came with a proper pedigree and, supposedly, the ultimate prize: the golden child.
