Chapter 3: The Shift in Power

The silence in the room stretched, thick and suffocating. Julian, Chloe, and Victoria waited for the inevitable breakdown. They expected Clara to collapse into hysterics. They wanted the begging, the screaming, the pathetic pleas for a second chance. It fed their egos. It validated their cruelty.
Chloe’s smirk widened, her hand continuing to stroke her red-clad stomach. Julian adjusted his cuffs, looking bored, as if waiting for a minor inconvenience to resolve itself. Victoria reached for a crystal glass of sparkling water, ready to enjoy the show.
But the show did not go as planned.
Clara stood perfectly still. The slight trembling in her hands ceased completely. She straightened her spine, pulling her shoulders back. The soft, wounded expression on her face vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute, terrifying calm. She didn't look at the divorce papers. She didn't look at the smug mistress in the red dress. She looked directly into Julian’s eyes.
"Your son?" Clara asked, her voice eerily quiet. It wasn't a question born of confusion, but a statement laced with an undetectable poison.
Julian frowned slightly, his arrogant smile faltering for a fraction of a second. "Are you deaf, Clara? Yes. My son. Chloe and I are starting a real family. Now, sign the damn papers."
Clara slowly reached down and picked up her expensive designer handbag resting on the edge of the leather armchair. The deliberate, unhurried nature of her movements unnerved the room. When a trapped animal doesn't panic, the hunters begin to worry.
"You know, Victoria," Clara said, her tone conversational, almost light, as she unzipped her bag. She didn't look at the matriarch, keeping her eyes locked on Julian. "You always told me that the foundation of the Sterling empire was built on truth and verified assets. You always demanded documentation for every transaction."
"What are you blathering about?" Victoria snapped, her patience wearing thin. "Just sign the papers and get out."
"I am securing my exit," Clara replied smoothly. Her hand disappeared into the depths of the bag. "And leaving you with a little parting gift. Since you value truth so highly, I thought it was only fair to provide some... verified documentation of my own."
Chloe let out an exasperated sigh. "Julian, make her stop. She's being dramatic. My feet are killing me."

"Shut up, Chloe," Clara said. The sharpness in her voice was like a whip cracking through the air. The mistress physically recoiled, her eyes widening in shock at the sudden display of dominance from the usually docile wife.
Clara pulled her hand out of the bag. She wasn't holding a pen to sign their demands. She was holding a thick, black medical folder, its edges crisp and official. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The smug superiority radiating from the Sterling family hit a sudden, invisible wall. The predator had just bared its teeth.
