Chapter 10 - The Sunrise She Chose

One year after the slap, Naomi woke before dawn.

Sunlight had not yet reached the windows of her apartment. The city was quiet, gray, and peaceful.

She made coffee.

She watered the plants near the window.

Then she stood before the mirror.

The bruise had disappeared months ago.

But she still remembered it.

Not as the worst thing that had happened to her.

As the moment she finally stopped lying to herself.

Her phone buzzed with a message from Lila.

Breakfast today?

Naomi smiled and replied.

Yes. I’ll bring pastries.

Later that morning, she walked through the park with Lila, holding a paper bag of warm croissants.

Children chased pigeons. Dogs pulled impatiently on leashes. The first sunlight broke through the clouds and covered the path in gold.

Lila looked at Naomi.

“You seem happy.”

Naomi thought about it.

“I am becoming happy.”

“That is enough.”

Naomi nodded.

“It is.”

Across the city, Trevor began another ordinary day.

He worked at a smaller company now, far from the office he once controlled. He attended therapy. He answered his sister’s calls only when he was strong enough to maintain boundaries.

He had lost the life he believed would last forever.

But Naomi had not destroyed him.

She had simply refused to let him destroy her anymore.

And that was the truth Candace, Trevor, and everyone who had expected Naomi to stay silent finally had to live with.

The woman they thought was too gentle to fight had never needed to become cruel.

She only needed to leave.

And once she did, she discovered that the sunrise was still waiting for her.
