Chapter 6 - The Empire Built on Her Silence

Trevor’s company began losing contracts.
Not because Naomi spread rumors.
She did not.
The financial audit forced the truth into the open.
Investors learned that company funds had been used to pay Candace’s fake consulting business. A major lender froze credit. Contractors asked whether payroll would be affected.
Trevor blamed Candace.
Then he blamed his accountant.
Then he blamed Naomi.
“She did this because she wanted revenge,” he told his lawyer.
The lawyer looked at him without sympathy.
“No, Trevor. She did this because she found evidence.”
The board removed Trevor as chief executive pending investigation.
He came home to the house he shared with Candace temporarily after Naomi left.
Candace was packing.
“You are leaving?” he asked.
She did not look up.
“You lost the company.”
“I have not lost it.”
“You lost your wife, your position, and half the money. What do you think happens next?”
Trevor stared at her.
“You said you would be here.”
Candace laughed.
“I said I was your sister. I did not say I was willing to drown with you.”
The words hit him with brutal clarity.
For years, he had protected Candace because he believed loyalty meant never questioning family.
But Candace’s loyalty had always depended on what Trevor could give her.
Naomi had been different.
She had stayed when he had little.
She had helped him organize his first contracts.
She had worked weekends without pay.
She had believed in him before anyone else did.
And he had allowed Candace to call her an outsider.
Trevor sat alone in the kitchen that night.
The room smelled faintly of rosemary.
Naomi had made rosemary chicken the night Candace slapped her.
He stared at the stove.
Then he finally cried.
Not because he was losing money.
Not because the board had turned against him.
May you like
But because he remembered Naomi standing in the rain while he held the door open.
And he understood that no apology could make that memory disappear.
