Chapter 7 - The First Honest Apology
Trevor asked Naomi to meet him at a public park.
She agreed because their attorneys needed to discuss the final settlement.
Not because she wanted to see him.
He arrived early.
No expensive coat. No polished confidence. No angry speech prepared.
Just Trevor sitting on a bench beneath bare trees.
Naomi approached with Evelyn beside her.
Trevor stood.
“Thank you for coming.”
Naomi sat across from him.
“What do you need?”
He swallowed.
“I need to apologize.”
“You have apologized.”
“No,” he said. “I have asked you to stop being angry. That is not the same thing.”
Naomi looked at him carefully.
Trevor’s eyes were red.
“I failed you,” he said. “Candace hurt you, and I protected her because it was easier than admitting she was wrong. I watched you leave in the rain because I cared more about keeping my family comfortable than keeping you safe.”
Naomi said nothing.
He continued.
“I used your silence as proof that you would stay. I let you handle my life, my finances, my home, and my emotions, then acted as though you were lucky to be included.”
The wind moved through the trees.
Trevor lowered his eyes.
“I do not expect forgiveness. I do not expect you to come back. I only want you to know that I understand what I did.”
Naomi looked at him.
“You understand now because you have lost things.”
“Yes.”
“And would you understand if you had not?”
Trevor’s face tightened.
“I do not know.”
Naomi nodded.
“That is honest.”
He looked up.
“I am trying to become someone better.”
“Do it,” Naomi said. “But do not do it for me.”
Trevor’s eyes filled.
“I will.”
Their divorce was finalized two months later.
Naomi kept her share of the home, but she did not want it.
She sold the house.
The kitchen where Candace slapped her was renovated by strangers.
The pendant lights were removed.

And Naomi moved into a small apartment filled with plants, books, sunlight, and no one who expected her to apologize for being hurt.
