Chapter 1 - The Phantom Diagnosis

I stared at the paperwork in my hands, the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor reflecting off the glossy pages of the fertility clinic’s letterhead.

I recognized the logo immediately. It was the elite Gold Coast reproductive center where Sofia and I had spent two years of our lives, enduring agonizing treatments, endless injections, and the crushing despair of negative results. But the documents I was looking at now did not match the devastating news Dr. Aris had delivered to us in those quiet, sterile consultation rooms.

The first page was a certified genetic viability report.

It listed three perfectly healthy, Grade-A embryos.

My eyes darted to the second page. It was a consent form authorizing the immediate destruction of those exact embryos due to "severe chromosomal abnormalities." At the bottom of the page was my signature.

Except the ink was wrong. The slant of the letters was entirely fabricated. I had never signed that piece of paper.

“Look at the employee signature on the transfer log, Adrian,” Margaret said, her voice shaking with a terrifying, righteous grief.

I looked at the bottom left corner.

Authorized by: Bianca Russo, Patient Care Coordinator.

The air in my lungs turned to shards of glass.

I slowly lifted my head and looked at the woman standing beside me. Bianca had worked at the clinic. It was where we had met. She was the sympathetic, beautiful liaison who had held my hand in the waiting room while Sofia was recovering from the procedures. She was the one who had brought me coffee, listened to my frustrations, and quietly, poisonously planted the seeds of doubt about my marriage.

“You destroyed my children,” I whispered.

It wasn't a question. The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. Bianca hadn't just comforted a grieving husband. She had orchestrated the grief. She had falsified the lab results, forged my signature to destroy our viable embryos, and altered Sofia’s blood panels to make it look like her ovarian reserve was completely depleted. She had systematically, chemically, and legally dismantled my marriage to clear a path to my wealth.

Bianca took another step backward, her back hitting the cold wall of the corridor. The arrogant, demanding woman who had just been complaining about a VIP suite was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered, terrified animal.

“Adrian, please,” Bianca stammered, tears of sheer panic flooding her eyes. “She was obsessed! The treatments were making her crazy! You were miserable! I just wanted to give you a way out so we could be together!”

“Matteo,” I said, my voice completely devoid of volume or mercy.

My lieutenant stepped forward instantly.

“Take her phone,” I ordered, my eyes never leaving Bianca’s trembling face. “Take her keys. Freeze her accounts. And put her in the secure holding room in the basement of the warehouse.”

“No! Adrian, you can’t!” Bianca shrieked, clutching her swollen stomach. “I’m carrying your child! You can’t do this to your baby!”

I stepped into her personal space, the sheer, unfiltered violence radiating from my frame making her choke on her own breath.

“Is it my child, Bianca?” I asked softly. “Or is it Dr. Aris’s child? The man who had to sign off on those forged documents for you?”

Bianca’s face went entirely, sickeningly pale. The silence that followed was a confession louder than any scream.

“Get her out of my sight,” I commanded, turning my back on her. “Before I forget we are in a hospital.”

Matteo grabbed Bianca by the arm, muffling her hysterical protests as he dragged her toward the freight elevators, erasing her from my reality with absolute, ruthless efficiency.
