Chapter 5 - The Reclamation

Three weeks later, the crisp, autumn sun poured through the massive windows of the VIP recovery suite at Rush University Medical Center.
I sat in the leather chair beside the hospital bed, holding a sleeping baby boy against my chest. We had named him Leo. He was breathing on his own now, growing stronger with every passing day.
I heard a soft rustling of sheets.
I looked up. Sofia’s dark eyes were open, watching me. She was pale, her body battered and recovering from a trauma that nearly killed her, but the profound, unyielding strength that had always defined her was radiating from her gaze.
“You’re holding him wrong,” she whispered, her voice raspy but laced with a faint, beautiful trace of a smile.
I carefully stood up, walking to the edge of the bed, and gently transferred our son into her arms. I watched the way she looked at him, the absolute, pure devotion shining in her face, and the guilt threatened to consume me all over again.
“Sofia,” I said, sinking to my knees beside her hospital bed, resting my forehead against her hand. “I was a fool. I was a cruel, arrogant fool, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to earn your forgiveness.”
She didn't pull her hand away. She simply rested it against my cheek, her thumb brushing away a stray tear.
“I didn't survive that operating room for an apology, Adrian,” Sofia said softly, her eyes holding mine with an intensity that commanded the absolute truth. “I survived because I have a son to raise. And if you are going to be in his life, you are going to be the man I fell in love with, not the monster who walked away.”

I looked at the woman who had fought death and won, holding the son who had survived a web of lies to take his first breath.
“I am yours,” I vowed, the words sealing a promise that no federal agency, no corrupt doctor, and no rival syndicate could ever break. “Always.”
