Chapter 3: The Gilded Cage

Elena tried to stand.
Julian’s hand was a wall against her chest. He shoved her back down.
"Sit. Down."
"I need air," Elena choked out. "I can't breathe in here."
"You’ll breathe when we tell you to," Martha said, straightening her blazer.
Martha paced the rug. A predator in a tailored suit.
"Do you think the police care about a girl like you? A waitress who climbed too high? You’re a footnote, Elena."
Elena looked at Sarah. "Sarah, please. You’re a woman. You’re going to be an aunt. How can you let them do this?"
Sarah finally turned. Her eyes were empty.
"I’m a Sterling, Elena. Family first. Always."
Sarah walked over and picked up a heavy crystal decanter. She poured a glass of amber liquid and handed it to Julian.
They weren't just a family. They were a cult of greed.
