Chapter 7: The Chase

Elena didn't wait. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the weight of her belly.
She bolted for the heavy oak doors.
"GET HER!" Martha screamed.
Elena burst into the hallway. The house was a labyrinth of shadows. She knew the back stairs led to the kitchen, and the kitchen led to the garage.
She heard footsteps behind her. Heavy. Fast.
Julian was coming.
She reached the stairs and threw herself down them, sliding, her hand burning on the banister.
She hit the bottom and rounded the corner into the kitchen.
Sarah was already there.
She stood by the island, a kitchen knife in her hand.
"Going somewhere, Elena?"
Sarah lunged. Elena grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the rack and swung with every ounce of strength she had left.
CLANG.
The skillet hit Sarah’s temple. The girl dropped like a stone.
