Chapter 1 - The Architecture of Silence

The cool Parisian air biting at my cheeks felt like a baptism. I stood on the ornate wrought-iron balcony of the VIP club, the neon lights of the Champs-Élysées painting the city in vibrant, chaotic hues below me. The phone felt heavy against my ear. The man on the other end of the line was Gabriel Thorne.
Seven years ago, Gabriel had been the primary venture capitalist interested in backing House of Laurent. He was a brilliant, ruthless financier who possessed an uncanny ability to read people. After a single hour-long meeting, Gabriel had pulled me aside and whispered, “You are a generational talent, Vivienne. But the man standing next to you is a parasite. If you let him hold the reins, he will eventually ride you into the ground.”
Julian had been furious. He had manipulated my loyalty, convincing me that Gabriel was trying to divide and conquer us, forcing me to reject the funding and push Gabriel out of our professional circle entirely. I had spent seven years believing I was protecting the man I loved. Now, holding the undeniable digital proof of Julian’s infidelity, I realized I had only been protecting my own executioner.
"I remember exactly what you told me seven years ago, Gabriel," I said softly, my breath pluming in the cold night air. "You told me to call you when I finally woke up."
A low, vibrating hum of dark amusement sounded through the receiver. "And the sleeping beauty finally opens her eyes," Gabriel murmured, his voice rich and dangerously calm. "Thirty days before the wedding, Vivienne. That is quite the dramatic awakening. What exactly did Julian do?"
"He forgot who actually owns the empire he is currently standing on," I replied, my voice stripped of all emotion, forged into absolute ice. "I am not calling to cancel the wedding, Gabriel. I am calling to turn it into a corporate slaughterhouse. But I need your legal team, and I need your capital to restructure the board the exact second I drop the guillotine."
"I will be on a private jet to New York by tomorrow morning," Gabriel promised, the thrill of the hunt evident in his tone. "Send me the financial portfolios. Let’s burn his kingdom to the ground."

I ended the call, slipped my massive, flawless-cut diamond engagement ring back onto my finger, and walked back into the pulsating heat of the after-party. Julian was holding court near the bar, charming a group of fashion editors with his blinding, practiced smile. He looked up, his eyes catching mine, and he lifted his champagne flute to me in a silent, adoring toast.
I smiled back, lifting my own glass. I walked over, slipping my arm through his, resting my head against his shoulder. I could smell the faint, lingering scent of Chloe’s vanilla perfume clinging to his lapel. For the next thirty days, I would have to be the greatest actress the fashion world had ever seen. I would have to kiss the lips of a man who was actively planning my emotional destruction, and I would have to do it with a smile. Because Julian Vance was about to learn that hell hath no fury like a woman who controls the trademarks.
