Chapter 5 - The Velvet Throne

The aftermath of the cathedral confrontation was a spectacular, global media bloodbath.

The video of me rejecting Julian at the altar, exposing his affair and his corporate embezzlement in front of the world's fashion elite, broke the internet within an hour. The narrative was instant and undeniable: Julian Vance was a predatory, manipulative fraud who had attempted to steal the empire of a brilliant, self-made woman.

Without the protection of my legal team and my public relations machine, Julian’s life disintegrated with terrifying speed. Because the evidence of his corporate theft was irrefutable, the district attorney opened a formal investigation into wire fraud. His assets were frozen. His bank accounts were seized. He was forced to move out of his luxury apartment and into a cramped, depressing rental in Queens.

The epic, secret romance he had promised Chloe evaporated the moment the limitless credit cards were declined. Realizing that she had tethered herself to a disgraced, broke pariah facing potential prison time, Chloe packed her designer bags—the ones Julian had bought with my money—and abandoned him completely. She was blacklisted from every fashion house in the city.

I, on the other hand, ascended to a level of power and influence I had never imagined.

Six months after the wedding that never happened, I stood in the massive, sunlit corner office of the newly rebranded House of Laurent headquarters. The brand’s revenue had tripled, largely driven by the massive success of the virtual KOC campaign I had launched in the shadows. I was no longer the quiet artist hiding behind a loud, arrogant man. I was the undisputed, untouchable queen of the fashion world.

The heavy glass doors of my office swung open, and Gabriel Thorne walked in. He looked exceptionally handsome in a tailored navy suit, carrying two cups of espresso. Over the last six months, our ruthless corporate alliance had organically, seamlessly blossomed into a deep, profound mutual respect, and eventually, a quiet, powerful romance.

Gabriel didn't need to diminish my light to feel secure in his own masculinity. He celebrated my ruthlessness, he championed my ambition, and he looked at me as an equal force of nature.

"The final acquisition papers for the Paris atelier just came through," Gabriel said, handing me an espresso and leaning against the edge of my glass desk. His dark eyes crinkled with a warm, genuine smile. "You completely dominated the European market, Vivienne. The board is terrified of you, and I couldn't be prouder."

"We dominated it, Gabriel," I corrected him, taking a sip of the bitter, rich coffee.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling, glittering skyline of Manhattan. I had lost a deceptive fiancé, a treacherous assistant, and a profound amount of naive innocence. But in the ashes of that cathedral, I had found my own unshakeable voice, my absolute power, and a partner who actually understood the true architecture of loyalty.

I lifted my espresso cup, toasting the reflection in the glass, knowing that the empire I had built was finally, exclusively, entirely mine.
