The Woman in the Back Seat / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Evidence No One Expected

Khloe arrived at Isabella’s attorney’s office the next morning wearing sunglasses and a dark coat despite the clear sky.

She looked exhausted.

Gone was the polished confidence from the front seat of the town car. Gone was the woman who had laughed at Isabella beneath the restaurant awning.

In her place was someone frightened.

Helen Ward sat beside Isabella in the conference room, a legal pad open in front of her.

Khloe placed her phone on the table.

“I didn’t know he was doing all of this,” she said.

Isabella did not respond.

Khloe took a breath.

“I knew about you. I knew he was married. I am not going to pretend I am innocent.”

Helen nodded. “That is a start.”

Khloe swallowed.

“But he told me you had an arrangement. He said you lived separate lives. He said you only stayed married because of the business.”

“And you believed him?” Isabella asked.

Khloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to.”

That answer was honest enough to sting.

Khloe unlocked her phone and opened a folder containing screenshots, voice messages, and photographs.

“I started saving things when I got nervous,” she said. “He would tell me one thing, then another thing happened. He said he was divorcing you. Then he took you to a charity gala. He said the company was doing great. Then he told me he could not transfer money because investors were watching.”

She handed the phone to Helen.

“There are messages about accounts. And payments. And another woman.”

Helen scrolled through the evidence slowly.

Then she stopped.

“This is important,” she said.

“What?” Isabella asked.

Helen turned the screen toward her.

One message from Mark read:

Move the Harbor Point funds through the Jenkins account before the lender review. Isabella cannot see the real numbers.

Isabella felt the room tilt.

Harbor Point was not just another development project.

It was the largest project Brooks Development had ever attempted: a waterfront mixed-use complex involving city permits, private lenders, and more than two hundred million dollars in projected investment.

The project had been Isabella’s idea.

She had spent four years negotiating land rights, community partnerships, and environmental approvals.

Mark had taken credit for it at every press conference.

Now he may have used it to hide money.

Helen’s voice became firm.

“We need forensic accountants immediately.”

Khloe looked between them.

“Am I in trouble?”

Helen answered honestly. “That depends on what you knew, what you signed, and whether you cooperate.”

Khloe’s face crumpled.

“I will cooperate.”

For the next two weeks, Isabella worked sixteen-hour days.

She met with auditors, attorneys, bankers, and board members. She reviewed documents until her eyes burned. She discovered payments routed through shell companies, inflated consultant invoices, and an attempt by Mark to use Harbor Point funds as collateral for personal debts.

The debts were worse than anyone imagined.

Mark had borrowed heavily to maintain the appearance of success.

Private club memberships.

Luxury travel.

A penthouse lease for Khloe.

Gambling losses from secret trips to Atlantic City.

Loans from investors who expected favors in return.

The empire he bragged about had been built on a foundation that was beginning to crack.

One rainy Thursday evening, Isabella found Mark waiting outside her office.

He stood under an umbrella, looking older than he had two weeks earlier.

“You are destroying me,” he said.

Isabella paused beneath the building’s canopy.

“No, Mark. I am discovering who you are.”

“You do not understand what is at stake.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“If Harbor Point collapses, hundreds of people lose their jobs.”

“Then why did you gamble with their future?”

He looked away.

“I made mistakes.”

“You keep using that word.”

“Because I am human.”

“No,” Isabella said quietly. “You use it because calling them mistakes sounds better than calling them choices.”

Mark stepped closer.

“I loved you once.”

The words landed between them.

Isabella felt a distant ache.

Not because she wanted him back.

Because she remembered the young man he used to be. The one who worked beside her at a cheap kitchen table. The one who kissed her forehead when she stayed awake balancing accounts. The one who promised that if they ever became successful, they would never become cruel.

“You loved what I did for you,” she said.

“That is not fair.”

“It is more fair than anything you gave me.”

Mark’s eyes hardened.

“You think you can run this company without me?”

“I already have.”

He laughed once, without humor.

“You have no idea how brutal this industry is.”

“I learned from you.”

That night, Mark made a decision.

If Isabella would not protect him, he would force her to.

The next morning, anonymous emails appeared in the inboxes of board members, investors, and journalists.

The subject line read:

ISABELLA BROOKS HIDES ASSETS WHILE HER HUSBAND TAKES THE FALL.

Attached were false documents suggesting Isabella had transferred company money into offshore accounts.

By noon, reporters were waiting outside Brooks Development.

By one, the company’s stock value began to drop.

By two, Isabella’s photograph appeared beside headlines questioning whether she had orchestrated the entire scandal.

And by three, Helen Ward received a message from a number she did not recognize.

It contained only six words.

Tell Isabella to sign the settlement.

Then came a photograph.
