Chapter 8 - The Offer at the Front Door

On a bright autumn morning, a black town car stopped outside Isabella’s office.

For one second, her body tensed.

The memory of rain, humiliation, and an open back door returned so sharply she could almost hear Khloe laughing.

Then the rear door opened.

Ethan stepped out.

He was holding coffee in one hand and a small velvet box in the other.

Isabella stared at him through the office window.

“Oh no,” Robert said from behind her. “Is he about to do what I think he is doing?”

“I hope not in front of employees,” Isabella muttered.

But Ethan came inside anyway.

Every head in the lobby turned.

He walked toward Isabella, smiling nervously.

“I had a speech planned,” he said.

“That is never a good sign.”

“But then I remembered you hate speeches when people are trying to avoid saying something simple.”

Isabella folded her arms.

“Go on.”

Ethan opened the velvet box.

Inside was not a giant diamond.

It was a delicate ring with a small sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.

“It belonged to my grandmother,” he said. “She taught me that the best marriages are not built by people who need each other to be whole. They are built by people who choose each other while already standing on their own.”

The lobby became completely silent.

Ethan took a breath.

“Isabella Brooks, will you choose me?”

She covered her mouth with one hand.

Then she laughed through tears.

“Yes,” she said. “But only if we never own a town car.”

Everyone burst into laughter and applause.

Ethan slipped the ring onto her finger.

It fit perfectly.

Later that night, Isabella stood in front of the mirror at home.

She looked at the sapphire ring beside the old wedding band she had finally removed months earlier.

For a long time, she had thought the end of her marriage meant the end of her story.

But it had only been the end of one chapter.

And the beginning of the first life that truly belonged to her.
