Chapter 2: The Severed Tie

Margaret pressed herself desperately against the cold wood of the bookshelf, her face drained of all its arrogant color and her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Daniel, please! You don't understand the situation! She—she attacked me first! I swear to you! I was only trying to protect my beautiful grandson from this awful, manipulative woman!"
But Daniel had seen more than enough. He let go of his mother’s shoulders with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust, as if he had just touched something toxic. Without another word to her, he rushed to Emily's side, dropping heavily to his knees on the carpet. He wrapped his strong arms around his trembling, sobbing wife, pulling her protectively against his chest. Emily buried her face into his shirt, her fingers clutching the fabric so tightly her knuckles turned white, holding onto him as if he were her only lifeline in a terrifying storm. In the wooden crib beside them, the baby began to wail loudly, finally fully awakened by the violent chaos.

"I saw everything, Mom," Daniel growled, his voice dropping from a furious, echoing scream to a lethally calm, measured whisper. He gently stroked Emily's tangled hair, trying to soothe her violent shivering. "I stood right there in the doorway. I saw you dragging my defenseless wife across the floor by her hair like she was an animal. You didn't come into this house to protect my son. You came in here to destroy my family."
Margaret’s jaw dropped in genuine shock. "Daniel, I am your mother! I gave you life! You cannot possibly choose this... this outsider over your own flesh and blood!"
