Chapter 2 - The Corporate Guillotine

Ashley scoffed, though the sound was hollow, laced with sudden uncertainty. "You can't do that. Eric is the CEO of Parker Holdings. Half of everything is his. We are going to take his half and raise our baby in the life he deserves!"
I couldn't help it. I laughed.
It wasn't a hysterical laugh. It was a genuine, quiet chuckle that cut through the heavy silence of the ballroom.
"Parker Holdings," I said, shaking my head. I reached into my evening clutch and pulled out a folded legal document. "Eric, why don't you explain to Ashley how Parker Holdings is structured?"
Eric buried his face in his hands. He couldn't speak.

"He can't, so I will," I announced to the room, projecting my voice clearly. "Eric is the CEO in name only. Parker Holdings is a subsidiary of my grandfather's trust. A trust that I am the sole beneficiary and primary shareholder of. I own the cars. I own the house in Upper Arlington. I own the country club memberships. Eric is essentially an employee. An employee with a morality clause in his contract."

I tossed the folded document onto the center of the table.
"Those are the finalized divorce papers, Eric," I said coldly. "And your termination notice. You are officially bankrupt and unemployed."
