Chapter 6: The Clean Break

The crisp, cool air of the city hit my face the moment the valet pulled open the heavy brass doors of the hotel. I took a deep, grounding breath, letting the oxygen fill my lungs. The suffocating weight I had carried for the last five years—the constant gaslighting, the subtle belittling, the exhausting masquerade of being Eric's quiet, supportive wife—evaporated completely into the night sky.
I didn't feel an ounce of grief. I felt dangerously, undeniably alive.
A sleek, heavily armored black Maybach glided to a halt at the curb. The rear door swung open, and a man stepped out into the dim, amber glow of the streetlights.
Sebastian Cross.
Sebastian was a titan in the global venture capital sector, a self-made billionaire with a reputation for clinical ruthlessness and a terrifying intellect. He was also the man who had quietly deployed his private security team to track Eric’s hidden offshore movements, and the one who had secured the expedited, irrefutable paternity test from a private lab. He stood at six-foot-three, wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow on the pavement. His piercing, stormy grey eyes locked onto me, scanning my face for any sign of emotional collateral damage.
He found none.
"I take it the chicken was dry?" Sebastian murmured, his deep baritone voice rumbling in the quiet street as his lips curved into a dangerous, devastatingly handsome smirk.
"Incredibly dry," I smiled, stepping toward him, the adrenaline of absolute victory humming in my veins. "But the entertainment was spectacular. You should have seen his face when David threw the lab results on the stage. It was a masterpiece."
Sebastian’s gaze darkened with a fierce, possessive pride. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently gripping the small of my back, guiding me into the cavernous, leather-scented interior of the Maybach.
As the car pulled away from the curb, leaving the hotel and the shattered remnants of my past behind, Sebastian poured two glasses of vintage bourbon from the center console. He handed me one, our fingers brushing lightly—a spark of electricity that had been building between us for six months of secret meetings and late-night strategy sessions.
"Eric’s firm has already been notified," Sebastian stated, his tone shifting into the clinical precision of an apex predator. "My contacts at the state bar received the anonymous dossier regarding his unethical billing practices thirty minutes ago. He won't just lose his partnership by Monday. He will likely face disbarment."
"And Ashley?" I asked, taking a slow sip of the burning liquid.
"David’s lawyers filed for emergency sole custody of the child while you were making your exit," Sebastian replied, his eyes never leaving mine. "And since Ashley publicly admitted to attempting to extort a prominent politician, her parents have officially severed her trust fund. She is entirely destitute."
I leaned my head back against the plush leather seat, closing my eyes. It was done. The parasites who had tried to drain my bank accounts and my sanity had been surgically removed and dropped into a financial abyss.
"You played a flawless game," Sebastian whispered, moving slightly closer, his scent of cedar and expensive cologne wrapping around me. "You didn't just beat them. You erased them."
May you like
I opened my eyes, looking at the man who had handed me the ammunition and trusted me to fire the gun. "I couldn't have done it without your resources, Sebastian."
"You would have found a way," he corrected softly, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. "You are a force of nature. I merely provided the stage. The victory is entirely yours."
