Chapter 8: Forged in Steel

Two years later.

The private gardens of the Cross Estate in the Hamptons were in full, glorious bloom. The sprawling, historic stone mansion sat on three hundred acres of pristine, heavily guarded land, surrounded by towering oak trees and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

It was a sanctuary built on the foundation of an unbreakable empire.

I stood on the massive stone patio, wearing a simple, elegant white silk slip dress, sipping a glass of sparkling water. The morning sun cast a golden glow over the manicured lawns.

The journey to this moment had been nothing short of extraordinary. Following Eric’s complete exile from New York—he was currently working as a night-shift paralegal in a strip mall in Ohio—my acquisitions firm had dominated the market. I hadn't just survived the betrayal; I had weaponized it, turning myself into a ruthless, highly respected force on Wall Street.

And beside me, every single step of the way, was Sebastian.

We had married a year ago in a private, fiercely guarded ceremony in Tuscany. There were no cameras, no press, and no false friends. It was just us, sealing a bond that was forged in the fires of absolute mutual respect and profound, terrifying love. Sebastian wasn't just my husband; he was my equal, my protector, and the only man on earth who truly understood the weight of the crown I wore.

The heavy glass doors of the patio slid open.

Sebastian walked out, dressed in casual linen slacks and a dark fitted t-shirt that highlighted his muscular frame. He held a stack of morning financial papers, but his eyes instantly bypassed them the moment he saw me. The ruthless billionaire who made corporate executives tremble vanished, replaced entirely by the devoted, fiercely loving husband.

He walked over, setting the papers on the glass table, and wrapped his strong arms around my waist from behind, pulling me flush against his chest. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the curve of my neck.

"The European merger was officially approved this morning," Sebastian murmured, his voice a deep rumble against my skin. "Your firm just doubled its global footprint."

"Our firm," I corrected smoothly, leaning back into his embrace and resting my hands over his. I traced the heavy platinum wedding band on his finger.

"You negotiated the final terms," Sebastian smiled, turning me around in his arms so he could look down into my eyes. "They were absolutely terrified of you. It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

"I learned from the best," I smiled, reaching up to run my fingers through his thick, dark hair.

I looked past his shoulder, out at the sparkling ocean. The chaos, the gaslighting, the tear-stained moments of a fake marriage—it was all gone. Burned to ash. I didn't think about Eric or Ashley anymore. They were ghosts from a past life, a life where I had shrunk myself to make a weak man feel tall.

"You look deep in thought, my Queen," Sebastian whispered, his thumb lightly brushing across my jawline.

"I was just thinking about how quiet it is," I replied honestly, looking back up into his stormy grey eyes. "How completely peaceful it is when you finally remove the dead weight from your life."

Sebastian’s expression softened into a breathtaking, radiant smile. He leaned forward, cupping my face in his warm hands.

"You will never carry dead weight again," Sebastian swore, his voice a deep, resonant vow. "You are the sky. And I will spend the rest of my life watching you soar."

He kissed me, a slow, deeply anchoring kiss that tasted of absolute safety and unbreakable devotion. It was the kind of love I hadn't even known existed—a love that didn't demand I surrender my power, but instead sharpened it, celebrated it, and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me on the battlefield.

The King and Queen had finally taken their thrones. Our enemies were in ashes, our empire was untouchable, and the reign we had unleashed on the world was nothing short of legendary.
