Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Biggest Mistake
Vanessa was arrested one week later.
Not for the affair.
Not for the cake.
But for fraud.
Investigators found that the shell company used to receive Jenna’s money had been created under Vanessa’s identity. The company had no legitimate operations, no employees, and no business history.
It existed only to hide stolen assets.
Vanessa called Jenna from a lawyer’s office.
“I didn’t know about the money,” she said.
Jenna stood in her grandmother’s penthouse, looking out over Manhattan.
“You knew Ethan was married.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You assaulted me in public.”
Vanessa began crying.
“He told me you were cruel. He said you trapped him with the pregnancy. He said the money was already yours because you never cared about it.”
Jenna’s hand moved over her stomach.
Ethan had made Vanessa believe she was special.
He had made Jenna believe she was loved.
The same lies, delivered differently.
“You still chose to hurt me,” Jenna said.
“I know.”
“Then tell the truth.”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Will you help me?”
“I will not protect you from consequences,” Jenna said. “But I will not stop you from telling investigators everything.”
Vanessa did.
She provided text messages, financial records, and a recorded conversation in which Ethan said Jenna would “fold the moment the scandal got ugly.”
The recording became the center of the case.
Ethan’s investors began pulling out.
His business partners issued statements distancing themselves from Caldwell Urban Developments.
And the friends who laughed at Jenna’s party began deleting their social media accounts.
