Chapter 7 - The Trial That Changed Everything
The trial began four months later.
Vanessa testified first.
She admitted she had believed Ethan’s lies because she wanted to believe she had been chosen over Jenna.
“I thought love meant winning,” Vanessa said. “But he never loved either of us. He used us differently.”
Ethan did not look at her.
When Jenna took the stand, the courtroom became silent.
She wore a simple blue dress and held no notes.
“I was humiliated,” she said. “I was frightened. I was eight months pregnant, and people laughed while another woman assaulted me.”
She paused.
“But the worst part was not the cake. It was my husband standing there and choosing silence.”
The prosecutor asked, “Why was that the worst part?”
“Because silence is also a choice,” Jenna answered. “And when someone has the power to protect you but chooses not to, they tell you exactly what you mean to them.”
Ethan was found liable for fraud, forgery, and conspiracy.
He lost control of Caldwell Urban Developments.
The court ordered restitution.
His custody rights were limited to supervised visitation until he completed counseling and fulfilled the court’s requirements.
When the verdict was read, Ethan closed his eyes.
