Chapter 4 - The Paternity Test

Connor stared at the paper in my hand as if it were laced with poison. He shook his head slowly.
"No," Connor choked out. "No, that's impossible. Look at him!" He pointed a shaking finger down at the little blond boy in the stroller. "I have a son! Melinda had my baby! You're making this up because you're bitter!"
I didn't say a word. I just looked at Melinda.
Connor slowly turned to look at his new wife.
Melinda was weeping openly now, her hands covering her face. She couldn't meet his eyes. She couldn't even speak.
"Melinda?" Connor asked, his voice suddenly sounding very small, very fragile. "Melinda, tell her she's lying."
"I... I wanted to give you what you wanted," Melinda sobbed, shrinking away from him. "You said you'd leave Kirsten if I gave you a family! You said you had the money! I just... I went to a donor bank, Connor! I used a donor! I didn't know you were lying about your tests!"

Connor backed away from the stroller as if it had suddenly caught fire. He looked at the little boy with bright blue eyes—eyes that didn't belong to him. He looked at the woman he had left me for, realizing she had trapped him with the exact same web of lies he had used to destroy me.
He had nothing. His pride, his legacy, his cruel little victory—it was all a complete fabrication.
