Chapter 5 - The Cure

"You are currently being served, Mr. Fleming," Kenneth said, stepping forward and dropping a second stack of papers directly onto the designer diaper bag. "For severe emotional distress, medical fraud, and the recovery of all marital assets you diverted to fund your bribes. My office expects to hear from your counsel by Monday."
Connor didn't respond. He just stood in the puddle of spilled milk, staring blankly at the wall, his perfect, arrogant life collapsing around him in real time.
I looked at the little boy in the stroller. He was sweet. He was innocent. He deserved a better mother than Melinda and a better man than Connor.
"Dr. Sinclair?" a nurse called out tentatively from down the hall. "Your department meeting starts in two minutes."
"Thank you, Sarah," I called back smoothly.

I looked at my ex-husband one last time. I felt no anger. No grief. I just felt the clean, satisfying relief of excising a tumor.
I turned on my heel and walked away, my white coat snapping softly with each step, leaving Connor entirely alone in the mess he had spent seven years making.
