Chapter 4 - The Evidence Giselle Left Behind
The police investigation into Giselle’s assault uncovered more than the hospital footage.
Her phone contained messages sent before she followed me into the parking garage.
Messages to Raymond.
Messages to a wedding planner.
Messages to someone named Malcolm Voss, Raymond’s chief financial officer.
One message, sent the night before I was attacked, read:
If Serena keeps the baby, she keeps a reason to stay in Raymond’s life. Handle the trust transfer before Friday.
Another said:
I can scare her. She always acts fragile.
The final message came from Malcolm.
Raymond is moving funds tonight. Once the company is clear, the divorce will not matter.
The detectives brought the printouts to Claire.
Claire brought them to me.
I stared at the words until the letters blurred.
Giselle had not attacked me only because she was jealous.
She believed getting rid of me would protect the money she and Raymond expected to enjoy.
Raymond had not merely been careless with my trust.
He had been preparing to strip the company, blame the losses on me, and walk away with enough assets to build a new life.
With Giselle.
The planned wedding was not a celebration.
It was an exit strategy.
But they had underestimated one thing.
I knew the company better than anyone.
I knew which accounts were real and which ones were used to hide transfers.
I knew which vendor contracts had been inflated.
I knew which passwords Raymond changed whenever he was afraid.
