Chapter 6 - The Viper's KissThe illusion of peace is the most dangerous weapon in a war.

Thursday evening, Raymond came home. He walked through the front door of our sprawling Boston estate wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, looking like the picture-perfect, devoted husband. He carried a bouquet of white lilies—my favorite—and wore an expression of deep, manufactured concern.

"Serena, darling," Raymond murmured, walking into the living room where I sat wrapped in a cashmere blanket, staring into the fireplace. He knelt beside my chair, placing a warm, heavy hand on my knee. "The detectives called me. They told me about Giselle. I am so, so sorry. I had no idea she was so unhinged. If I had known..."

He was a phenomenal actor. The sheer audacity of his lie, delivered with such flawless, teary-eyed sincerity, almost made me physically sick. He was pretending Giselle was just a deranged stalker, entirely omitting the fact that she was his mistress and co-conspirator.

"It was terrifying, Raymond," I said, forcing my voice to tremble. I looked down, playing the part of the broken, fragile wife perfectly. "I just... I can't handle the stress anymore. The attack, the baby, the company. It’s all too much."

Raymond’s eyes flashed with a microscopic glint of predatory triumph. He squeezed my hand.

"You don't have to handle it, sweetheart," he soothed, his voice dripping with venom masked as honey. "I’m here. I’ll take care of everything. In fact, Malcolm and I were reviewing the trust restructuring today. If you sign the final proxy authorization, I can manage the stress of the vendor transitions. You can just focus on resting. On the baby."

He pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket. It was the kill shot. The document that would officially transfer absolute, unquestionable control of my assets to his offshore accounts by tomorrow morning.

"Just sign here, Serena. Let me carry the burden," he whispered, offering me a gold fountain pen.

I looked at the document. I looked at the man I had loved, the man who had slept beside me for five years while plotting my total destruction.

I took the pen. My hand shook intentionally as I signed my name on the dotted line.

"Thank you, Raymond," I whispered, handing it back to him.

"No, thank you, my love," he smiled, kissing my forehead. The kiss felt like a brand of betrayal. "I have an early board meeting tomorrow to finalize some things, but I’ll be home by noon. We’ll order in. It will just be us."

"I can't wait," I replied.

As Raymond walked upstairs to shower, the fragile, weeping facade vanished instantly. I pulled out my burner phone and dialed Claire.

"He took the bait," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "He has my signature. He’s going to execute the transfer at the 9:00 A.M. board meeting tomorrow."

"The signature is legally void because we preemptively froze the trust accounts at 4:00 P.M. today," Claire replied, a dark amusement in her tone. "Are the federal agents in position?"

"They will be," I promised. "Tomorrow, Raymond Mercer is going to learn exactly why you never back a mother into a corner."
