Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Collapses"Raymond Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, embezzlement, and international money laundering," the lead FBI agent announced, his voice slicing through the chaotic murmurs of the stunned board of directors.

Raymond stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck. "No! You have no jurisdiction! Malcolm, tell them!"
But Malcolm Voss was already breaking. The coward who had meticulously documented every fraud to protect himself realized that his insurance policy was now his death warrant.
"It was him!" Malcolm shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Raymond as an agent aggressively pulled his arms behind his back. "Raymond orchestrated the whole thing! He told me to move the funds! He said Giselle was handling the offshore accounts! I’ll testify! I’ll give you everything!"
"Shut your mouth, you pathetic rat!" Raymond screamed, lunging across the table toward his CFO.
Two tactical agents intercepted Raymond mid-lunge. They slammed him face-first onto the polished mahogany table, the wood groaning under his weight. Cold, heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a definitive, satisfying click.
"You set me up!" Raymond spat, glaring at me with pure, unadulterated hatred, his cheek pressed against the table. "You knew! You let me sign the papers!"
"I let you build your own gallows, Raymond," I replied, my voice devoid of any pity. I stepped closer to him, leaning down so only he could hear me over the chaos. "You thought because I was kind, because I loved you, that I was weak. But you forgot whose name is on the building. You forgot that I am a mother. And you will never, ever be a threat to my child again."
"Get him out of here," Claire instructed the agents.
As they dragged Raymond and Malcolm out of the boardroom, the disgraced CEO kicking and cursing all the way to the elevator, the heavy, suffocating tension in the room finally broke.
The board members stared at me in stunned, terrified awe. I had just dismantled a billion-dollar coup without raising my voice.
"Gentlemen," I said calmly, turning back to face the room. I smoothed my black jacket. "The cancer has been excised from this company. The executive suite is temporarily suspended pending a full internal audit by my personal legal team. If anyone in this room aided Raymond in his embezzlement, I highly suggest you turn yourself in by sunset. Meeting adjourned."
They scrambled out of the room like frightened mice.
I stood in the empty boardroom, the adrenaline finally receding, leaving me breathless. Claire walked up beside me and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"It’s done, Serena," Claire said softly. "The accounts are secured. He’s going to federal prison for decades."
"Not yet," I whispered, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling Boston skyline. "There is one piece of trash left to take out."

Giselle was currently sitting in a private hospital room across the city, recovering from the injuries she sustained when she tried to attack me. She was expecting a phone call from Raymond, telling her they were billionaires and free to start their new life.
Instead, she was going to get a visit from me.
