Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Cell

But apex predators do not stop hunting just because they are in a cage.
It began on a freezing Tuesday morning. Adrian was standing in the estate’s newly designed, highly functional twelve-square-meter kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee while Owen sat at the granite island, happily coloring. The custom stainless-steel cabinets gleamed in the morning light—indestructible and flawless.
Then, Marissa walked into the kitchen. Her face was entirely drained of color, her hands trembling as she clutched an encrypted tablet.
"Adrian," she whispered, her voice tight with a panic he hadn't heard since the day he first met her. "Turn on the news."
Adrian grabbed the remote and flicked on the flat screen mounted on the far wall. Every major financial network and local Boston news channel was broadcasting the exact same glaring, red-bannered breaking news alert: FRAUD AT THE FOUNDATION? WHISTLEBLOWER CHARITY ACCUSED OF MASSIVE MONEY LAUNDERING.
"What is this?" Adrian demanded, his blood running completely cold.
The anchor was detailing a catastrophic "anonymous data leak" that had just flooded American social media platforms. The leak included fabricated offshore bank ledgers and sophisticated, digitally altered audio clips of Adrian supposedly conspiring to use the Keane Vanguard Foundation to hoard his illicit family wealth.
"It hit the internet at 4:00 AM," Marissa said, her eyes wide with terror. "By 6:00 AM, our major donors started freezing their pledges. The state attorney general just announced an emergency injunction. They are freezing the foundation’s accounts, Adrian. They are freezing Owen’s trust."
Adrian stared at the screen. The smear campaign was flawless, coordinated, and utterly devastating. It wasn't the work of a disgruntled ex-employee. It was a multi-million-dollar digital hit job.
His phone vibrated. The caller ID displayed a federal prison facility.

Adrian answered it, placing it on speaker.
"Good morning, little brother," Marcus’s voice echoed through the pristine kitchen, dripping with venomous, victorious malice. "Did you really think a concrete cell was going to stop me from burning your new life to the ground?"
