Chapter 8 - The Siege on the SanctuaryThe counter-strike was spectacular, but desperate men do not retreat when they are bleeding.

By nightfall, the viral momentum had violently shifted. The public, enraged by the audio of Marcus’s extortion, rallied behind the foundation. The attorney general publicly backed down, lifting the freeze on their accounts. But Marcus’s digital syndicate, furious that their multi-million-dollar shadow operation had been exposed, decided to move from virtual warfare to physical retaliation.

At 11:00 PM, a violent storm battered the Massachusetts coastline. Adrian and Marissa were in the living room when the perimeter alarms of the estate shrieked.

"They breached the outer gate," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of panic. He pulled a heavy, biometric lockbox from beneath the floorboards, extracting a matte-black firearm. He handed a secondary weapon to Marissa, whose hands were remarkably steady. She was no longer a victim; she was a mother defending her child.

Through the security monitors, they watched three unmarked black SUVs tear up the driveway, skidding to a halt on the wet gravel. A dozen armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear stepped out into the freezing rain. They weren't there to serve subpoenas. They were a hit squad hired to silence the people who had just exposed a global digital crime ring.

"Take Owen to the panic room," Adrian ordered, cocking his weapon. "Lock the steel bulkheads. Do not open them for anyone but me."

"I am not leaving you up here alone!" Marissa fiercely whispered, her eyes blazing.

"You are protecting the foundation of this family, Marissa," Adrian said, kissing her forehead with a fierce, unexpected devotion that made the breath catch in her throat. "I will handle the rot."

As Marissa sprinted down the hallway with a terrified but silent Owen in her arms, the heavy mahogany front doors of the estate violently burst open, splintering under a battering ram.

The mercenaries flooded into the grand foyer, their laser sights cutting through the dim, storm-lit darkness. They expected a terrified, soft billionaire hiding behind his desk.

Instead, the lights instantly cut out, plunging the entire estate into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Adrian had severed the main breaker. He knew the layout of his home blindfolded. He knew the blind spots, the angles, and the fatal funnels.

The hunters had just walked into a slaughterhouse.
